The impact of drone flights on the environment is currently a highly controversial topic. The results of this publication are based on literature studies, theoretical models, measurements, calculations and an analysis of drone flights carried out in recent years.
Both potential and actual effects on the environment are systematized and examined for their technical and organizational influencing factors. The technologies and processes selected for this are used in drone-based medical logistics for flights beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS).
The current legal bases, standards, recommendations and official requirements, which have been published mainly by the regulatory authorities, but also by competent organizations and industry associations, are taken into account. In some areas, standards from manned aviation were used if no standards have yet been developed for unmanned aviation. A literature search was carried out to identify previous research findings in the respective sub-areas and, where sufficiently relevant, these were taken into account. The majority of the knowledge gained is based on the author's 18 years of practical experience in the drone business.
As evidence of the predominantly irrelevant effects of drone flights on wildlife, potential shadow effects on animals on the ground were examined using simulations in the 3D software "Blender". Furthermore, 667 completed drone flights that were carried out as part of the fight against African swine fever were evaluated. Reactions of animals to flight noises caused by drones were observed and the disturbance factor caused by the visibility of the unmanned aircraft was analyzed.
As a result, it was found that the impact of drone flights on wildlife and the environment, especially as formulated by environmental authorities, tends to be overestimated and in some cases misjudged. This publication also develops practical procedures for the environmentally friendly planning and execution of drone flights.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), are remotely piloted or autonomous aircraft that have (r)evolutionized various industries, including agriculture, transportation, delivery, construction and defense. They are increasingly used for tasks that are dangerous or too difficult for human pilots or where an alternative implementation would be too expensive. Also known colloquially as drones, UAVs offer many advantages: including high flexibility, mobility and, in certain use cases, cost efficiency. In recent years, advances in UAV technology have greatly expanded the capabilities of drones, increasing their potential for a wide range of applications.
