Book: Unmanned Aerial Systems in Healtcare

It has been several years since I had the opportunity to contribute to the book “Unmanned Aerial Systems in Medical Care” as a co-author. The book is remarkable in that it not only provides theoretical foundations on how to overcome innovation barriers, but also describes practical considerations for possible application scenarios. It has certainly become clear that drone projects are not so easy to implement due to the ever-increasing complexity of the approval process and the high costs involved. The book provides essential basics that can be helpful when considering the introduction of drone logistics.

Unmanned aerial systems in Healthcare

Mina Baumgarten, Klaus Hahnenkamp, Steffen Fleßa

  • First position paper in Germany on the medical application of unmanned aerial systems (UAS)
  • Proposals and approaches for future innovation development and implementation
  • Scientific approach of the paper with a very high degree of practical relevance and applicability.

About

Using unmanned aerial systems (UAS) in medical care – what still sounds a little futuristic to many is currently the subject of several projects in Germany. In this book, more than 20 authors from a wide range of disciplines present their experiences, analyses, and findings in an interdisciplinary white paper. They present the status quo of unmanned aircraft system development in Germany, develop application scenarios for unmanned aerial systems in future medical care concepts, identify the most important barriers to innovation in implementation in current healthcare structures, and show ways to overcome them. The book addresses structural, technical, legal, regulatory, and conceptual barriers and issues. The experts succeed in making the complex content from the four subject areas of medical care, guidelines, unmanned aerial system technology, and the development of future operating concepts understandable. The book addresses all stakeholders in the innovation process surrounding medical UAS. For future standardized applications, this includes political actors with policy-making authority, medical users and businesspeople in the healthcare system, as well as developers of UAS technology and infrastructure in the healthcare sector.
